AI Agents for Founders Who Hate Hype

Every week there's a new demo of an AI agent that "does everything." In the demo, it works perfectly. In practice, it falls apart the moment anything unexpected happens.

Here's what AI agents can actually do for a small business right now.

What works reliably

Lead qualification — An agent that reads incoming form submissions, looks up the company on LinkedIn, scores the lead, and drafts a personalised first response. This works. It saves 2–3 hours a week.

Content repurposing — Turn a blog post into 5 social media posts, an email newsletter, and a short video script. Not creative work, but reliable production work.

Support ticket triage — Classify incoming tickets, route them, auto-respond to FAQs. Works well with a good knowledge base.

Weekly reports — Pull data from your tools, summarise it, send a digest. No human needed.

What doesn't work yet

  • Multi-step decision making where errors compound
  • Anything requiring judgment about nuanced business situations
  • Replacing human relationships

Where to start

Pick one repeatable task that takes 30–60 minutes per week. Something with clear inputs and a defined output. Build an agent for that one thing. See if it runs reliably for 2 weeks. Then expand.
